MEDIA ADVISORY: Civic Engagement Fair To Highlight Service
WHAT: The University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine will host a Civic Engagement Fair to showcase the service and service-learning work of students, faculty and staff from the UI health science colleges, including medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy, nursing, public health and dentistry.
WHEN: 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 2
WHERE: Medical Education and Research Facility (MERF) atrium and MERF Room 1117
The fair will feature posters, tabletop booths, and oral and visual presentations. Projects range from those completed by individuals and groups as part of their UI coursework to other events hosted by student interest groups, faculty and staff.
One example is a project by UI medical students Bryan Steussy, Justin Weis and Erika Levis. With the help of a $500 grant from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), the students developed a project addressing national "Cover the Uninsured Week" (http://covertheuninsured.org/), May 1-7. These students are also creating materials to educate undergraduate students about being uninsured and underinsured.
Other examples of service work are the annual Wheelchair Challenge, organized each year by UI physical therapy students, and the "Press-Out Domestic Violence" bench press competition and fundraiser hosted by UI medical students for the Johnson County Domestic Violence Intervention Program.
Connie Benton Wolfe, executive director of United Way of Johnson County, will address attendees and participants on the importance of service in the health professions.
