Skorton, Bowlsby Request Review Of Allegations
The following is a statement by University of Iowa President David Skorton and UI Director of Athletics Robert Bowlsby:
"Late yesterday we learned of allegations that as many as five University of Iowa football players may have received preferential treatment in obtaining merchandise from an employee of an area cell phone services provider, perhaps in exchange for tickets to the 2006 Outback Bowl.
"The allegations must be and will be treated with the utmost seriousness. We will move expeditiously to learn the facts of the situation so that the university and athletics department can determine the appropriate course of action.
"To accomplish that, the university's Office of the General Counsel, in collaboration with the athletics department, will investigate this matter and develop as full an accounting of the facts as possible. The initial investigation will be completed as soon as possible, but within 30 days.
"The University of Iowa takes great pride in its athletic programs and will do everything possible to assure that this process reflects our commitment to the highest levels of excellence and integrity."
