UI Director Of Bands Myron Welch Receives Outstanding Music Educator Award
Myron Welch, director of bands in the University of Iowa School of Music, has been selected as the recipient of the National Federation of State High School's Outstanding Music Educator Award for Section 4, representing the states of Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and Indiana.
A news release from the Iowa High School Music Association announcing the award, stated: "Dr. Welch through his work with the University of Iowa and his work through the Iowa Bandmasters Association has touched and influenced the lives of thousands of young musicians and their teachers.
"He has served as the guest conductor for numerous All-State bands, regional honor bands, summer music camps and community bands throughout the country. In Iowa, Dr. Welch has served as guest conductor of the Iowa All-State Band, and has conducted each of the Iowa Bandmasters Association District Honor Bands (most two or three times for a total of fourteen concerts). He has appeared as guest conductor/clinician with various high school bands throughout the state, numbering 130 times. He also regularly served as a band and orchestra adjudicator at several national contests and festivals."
Welch has been director of bands at the UI since 1980. In addition to conducting the Symphony Band and Chamber Wind Ensemble, Welch coordinates the graduate program in band conducting, and he teaches courses in instrumental methods, conducting and band literature. He was named a Collegiate Fellow in the UI College of Liberal Arts in recognition of years of distinguished teaching, research and service to the college.
Prior to joining the UI faculty, Welch was director of bands and coordinator of music education at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. He has bachelor's and master's degrees in music from Michigan State University and a doctorate in music education from the University of Illinois.
Welch is past president of the American Bandmasters Association, the Big 10 Band Directors Association and the Iowa Bandmasters Association.
