Jennifer Kayle/The Architects Perform March 24 And 25 At UI

Jennifer Kayle, a faculty member in the University of Iowa Department of Dance, will be joined by three of her long-term creative colleagues -- collectively known as the Architects -- for performances at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 24-25, in the Space/Place Theatre of UI North Hall.

The program will feature both established works and spontaneous choreography, in which company members collaborate to improvise choreography "in the moment."

"In the first half, a provocative quartet of dances will be presented by each of four company members -- works that include text, video, props and clever disguises," Kayle explains. "In the second half, the Architects will be joined by a trio of professional musicians -- Arthur Brooks, Michael Chorney, Jake Meginsky -- to collaborate in a spontaneous work of dance theater."

Other guests include UI Master of Fine Arts candidate Tom Truss and dancers from Kayle's advanced Improvisation class -- Kristin Best, Ellie Goudie-Averill, Jennifer Kray, Edward Rice, Jenna Riegel, Sarah Perry and Huiying Zhang.

The Architects grew out of collaborations between Kayle, Katherine Ferrier, Lisa Gonzales and Pamela Vail, dating back to the late 1980s at Middlebury College. For nearly 20 years, the quartet has been engaged in celebrating composition through their commitment to collaborative movement research.

The Architects have presented their work in venues including the Improvisation Festival/NY; the Improvised and Otherwise Festival of Sound and Movement in New York; the Big Range Dance Festival in Houston; the Fringe Festival in Minneapolis; the Flynn Theatre in Burlington, Vt.; Movement Arts at Thornes in Northampton, Mass.; and Franklin & Marshall, Middlebury, Muhlenberg and Keene state colleges.

They were the company in residence at Work in the Performance of Improvisation from 2001-2005 at Middlebury College in Bennington, Vt.
