Kathleen Edwards Will Lead Gallery Talk March 23 At UI Museum of Art

Kathleen Edwards, curator of European and American art at the University of Iowa Museum of Art (UIMA), will present a gallery talk on "Subject Matters: The Alan and Ann January Collection of American Prints and Drawings" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 23 in the museum's Hoover-Paul Gallery and Lasansky Room.

"Subject Matters: The Alan and Ann January Collection of American Prints and Drawings," an exhibition of 85 artworks that illustrate the collision of nature and modern urban life in landscape, still life and portraiture, will be on display at the UIMA through June 4. Admission is free to the UIMA and to Edwards' gallery talk.

"An observant life, as lived by the Januarys and as celebrated in their collection of prints and drawings from the first decades of the 20th century, is a life spent actively immersed in one's surroundings," Edwards said. "Engagement in a subject and commitment to its realistic portrayal are the essential ingredients of the works of art in the collection."

The Alan and Ann January Collection is a promised gift to the UIMA. The exhibition includes many of the most celebrated artists of the first decades of the 20th century, among them George Wesley Bellows, Thomas Hart Benton, Isabel Bishop, Charles E. Burchfield, William Glackens, Rockwell Kent, Reginald Marsh, Joseph Pennell, John Sloan and Grant Wood.

The UI Museum of Art, located on North Riverside Drive in Iowa City, is open noon to 9 p.m. Thursdays. Admission is free. Public metered parking is available in UI parking lots west and north of the museum.
