UI Army ROTC Honors Cadet With Hanson Award
The University of Iowa Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) recently honored Cadet Francis P. De Rosa of Lincolnwood, Ill., a senior in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, with the Lt. Col. Lynn C. Hanson Award for the pursuit of excellence in ROTC.
The award, which included a check for $1,000, is given on behalf of the Hanson family to a cadet in the program who has demonstrated extraordinary leadership both inside and outside the classroom.
The award is named in honor of the late Mr. Hanson, a 1975 UI Army ROTC graduate and Army lieutenant colonel, who died in a motorcycle accident in 2000. Commissioned through the UI Army ROTC program as an infantry officer, he served in numerous infantry and psychological operations (PSYOPS) positions in Grenada, Israel, Jordan and Operation Desert Storm. It is in his honor -- as well as in honor of all men and women training for or serving in the U.S. Armed Forces or Reserve Units -- that the Hanson family donates to the UI ROTC program. The award was presented by Lyle Hanson, the twin brother of Lt. Col. Hanson.
