Local Author Mary Vermillion Reads From New Novel On WSUI March 20

Local author Mary Vermillion will read from her new novel, "Murder by Mascot: A Mara Gilgannon Mystery," at 7 p.m. Monday, March 20, on the "Live from Prairie Lights" series on University of Iowa radio station WSUI, AM 910.

The broadcast will originate in a free event hosted by Julie Englander in the Prairie Lights bookstore at 15 S. Dubuque St. in downtown Iowa City. Listen on the Internet at

The novel's plot will sound familiar in Iowa: It concerns the rape of a UI women's basketball player by a men's basketball player. As talk-show host and amateur sleuth Mara Gilgannon becomes involved in tracking down the truth, the issue of protecting the women's team's heterosexual image becomes involved.

Vermillion, a UI alumna, is a faculty member at Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids. Her first novel, "Death by Discount," was a finalist for two Lambda awards
