MEDIA ADVISORY: Media Opportunity At Old Capitol Museum March 15
WHAT: On Wednesday, March 15, University of Iowa student volunteers will help Old Capitol Museum staff members prepare for the building's May 6 grand reopening by setting up exhibit spaces, working with artifacts and organizing the gift shop. Several of the students are part of the university's museum studies program and will be gaining hands-on museum experience. All of the more than 30 volunteers will earn credit toward the 10,000 Hours Show, a program that encourages community volunteerism among high school and college students by rewarding civic engagement with a concert ticket.
In preparation for their specialized work, students will attend a two-hour mandatory orientation and training session. Each student work session includes two hours of museum work and a free lunch, with food donated by New Pioneer Co-op, Subway, Dairy Queen, Hy-Vee and Bruegger's Bagels, and each volunteer will get an "Old Cap" hat donated by Old Capitol Screen Printers.
WHEN: 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday, March 15
WHERE: Media interested in attending the event must use the entrance on the south side of the building.
WHY: This will be the only opportunity for media to see the newly renovated interior of the Old Capitol until April 25, when a media preview is planned in conjunction with a Faculty Senate meeting in the building. Only the first and second floors will be available for viewing: the ground floor galleries are still under construction.
NOTE: We request no advance publicity for this event, as the building and event are not open to the public.
