UI Comes In Under Budget For Outback Bowl
The University of Iowa Department of Intercollegiate Athletics administered its trip to the 2006 Outback Bowl under the budget provided by the Big Ten Conference for teams that participate in the annual post-season bowl game played in Tampa, Fla.
Per league rules of organization and procedure, the UI was provided a budget of $1,450,000 to pay expenses associated with the Iowa football team's appearance in this year's Outback Bowl, the fourth straight appearance in a January bowl game for the UI and the Hawkeyes' second appearance in the Outback Bowl in three years.
The UI's expenses totaled $1,389,788 for a positive balance of $60,212.
The UI spent slightly more than $1 million on expenses related to its student-athletes, and its coaching and administrative staffs. Included in that total was more than $460,000 of expenses related to meals, lodging and per diem, and another $340,000 of expenses related to transportation.
The university incurred another $312,000 of expenses related to the UI Marching Band's participation in the event.
"We work very hard to provide a quality experience for our student-athletes while at the same time doing whatever is necessary and reasonable to assist our student-athletes and coaching staff to be fully prepared for the game itself. It's a credit to our coaching staff and our administrative staff that we could do all that within the budget provided us by the Big Ten Conference," said UI Director of Athletics Bob Bowlsby.
