‘Know the Score Live!’ Previews Iowa City Jazz Festival

For the opening night of the 2006 Iowa City Jazz Festival, Iowa Public Radio's KSUI-FM91.7 will broadcast “Know the Score Live!” from Iowa City's Pedestrian Mall Friday, June 30, from 5 to 9 p.m.

Iowa City Jazz Festival executive director Steve Grismore will preview the weekend's jazz lineup with "Know the Score" host Joan Kjaer and Phil Jones, vice president of Student Services at the University of Iowa.

The program will feature a talk with Grammy-award winning jazz artist Robin Eubanks. His performing experience includes his own groups, EB3 and Mental Images, as well as with the critically acclaimed Dave Holland Quintet and Big Band. He belongs to a musical family. His brother, Kevin Eubanks, is the music director for the Tonight Show and another brother, Duane, plays trumpet in New York. Their mother has been a music educator for more than 30 years, and their uncle, Ray Bryant, is a prominent jazz pianist.

The show will also include performances by Orquesta de Jazz y Salsa Alto Maiz and the United Jazz Ensemble, a group of musicians from City and West High Schools in Iowa City. They have been a part of the jazz festival for over 10 years and are members of the award-winning ensembles led by Bill Pringle and Rich Medd.

"KSUI and Iowa Public Radio are thrilled to partner once again with the Iowa City Jazz Festival in promoting and celebrating this amazing American musical idiom, jazz," Kjaer said.

People are invited to attend the free show on the Pedestrian Mall, hear the show on KSUI-FM 91.7, or in streaming audio on the KSUI-FM website Know the Score is KSUI's locally produced arts and humanities series sponsored by the University of Iowa Alumni Association.
