Wing, Jones Recognized By Iowa Women Lawyers Group

University of Iowa law professor Adrien Wing (left) will receive the Gertrude Rush Award from the Iowa Organization for Women Attorneys at the group's annual meeting June 22 in Des Moines.

Carolyn Jones (right), dean of the UI College of Law, will also deliver the keynote address at the conference.

The Gertrude Rush Award recognizes Iowa attorneys who demonstrate leadership in the community and in the profession, and concern for human and civil rights.  I.O.W.A. and the Iowa Chapter of the National Bar Association jointly sponsor the award, which is named after the first African-American woman to be admitted to practice law in Iowa in 1918.

Wing, who began teaching at the UI law school in 1987, specializes in U.S. constitutional and international law. She has been a consultant to the United Nations, served as a constitutional advisor to the African National Congress and organized an election-observer delegation to South Africa. She also has advised the Palestinian Legislative Council about Palestine's constitutional options, and advised the Eritrean Ministry of Justice on human rights treaties. Most recently she advised the Rwandan Constitutional Commission on a post-genocide constitution.

Wing was the chair of the Association of American Law Schools Minority Section in 2002 and serves on the Board of the U.S. Association of Constitutional Law.

In Iowa, she has served on the board of directors of the Iowa Peace Institute and the Iowa City Foreign Relations Council, and in 1999 was appointed to the Commission on the African American Prison Population by Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack.

The I.O.W.A. annual conference will begin at 7 p.m. June 22 at the Des Moines Marriott. I.O.W.A. is a statewide organization dedicated to promoting the welfare and interest of women lawyers, maintaining the honor and integrity of the profession of law and securing justice and equality for all Iowans.
