Graduate College Hosts First Summer Undergraduate Research Conference
The University of Iowa Graduate College will host its first Summer Undergraduate Research Conference on Monday, July 24, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Iowa Memorial Union Second Floor Ballroom. The event is open to the public, and UI faculty, students and staff are especially encouraged to attend.
The conference, which the college expects will become an annual event, will bring together 80 undergraduates who have been conducting research projects in university laboratories this summer across nine colleges and 30 departments.
Most of the students are participants in five UI research programs for top undergraduate scholars. Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP), Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs (IDGP), Iowa Biosciences Advantage (IBA), Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP), and Summer Undergraduate MSTP Research Program (SUMR) attract students from Iowa, the Midwest, across the United States and Puerto Rico. Additional participants include UI undergraduates working in various campus laboratories who will make presentations as part of their research training and professional development.
All students participating in the conference work directly with faculty mentors in campus research programs and laboratories. Summer research programs help the Graduate College and its programs recruit talented students, many of whom choose to continue their work at the UI as graduate scholars.
The Graduate College offers the conference as the culmination of the summer undergraduate research experience at Iowa. Students prepare for future careers in research through this opportunity to present their findings to the Iowa research community.
