MEDIA ADVISORY: UI Student Studying In Israel Can Share Insights Of Experience

WHAT: University of Iowa junior Jordan Pomeranz, 20, a political science and English double major, went to Israel July 5 to study abroad through an independent program at the University of Haifa's summer Ulpan (language) program. Haifa, a northern city and Israel's main seaport, is located at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea and lies on and around the slopes of Mount Carmel.

In addition to learning Hebrew, the West Des Moines native is gaining much more -- a firsthand view of the tensions in the Middle East.

Pomeranz made it safely from Haifa to Jerusalem, where he will continue to study Hebrew. He plans to return to Iowa Aug. 28.

His cell phone number is 011-972-525-255-310. (A special note -- the phone number segments each consist of 3 digits, not 4 -- and the time zone is seven hours ahead of Central Daylight Time, so the best time to reach Jordan is between noon and 2 p.m. Central Daylight Time.)

Pomeranz's parents, Jeffrey and Nancy Pomeranz, are also willing to speak to the media. They can be reached at the following cell phone numbers: 515-202-3612 or 515-202-5333.

Security measures have been posted on Haifa's Department of Overseas Studies Web site:

For more information on study abroad, safety guidelines or security measures, contact Diana Davies, director of University of Iowa International Programs, at 319-335-0371 or visit the UI Office for Study Abroad Web site at
