University of Iowa law professor Mark Sidel will deliver the keynote address at an international gathering of scholars studying philanthropy, the nonprofit sector and civil society in Thailand this month.

Sidel's address, "The Third Sector, Human Security, and Anti-Terrorism Regulation in Comparative Perspective," will be delivered at the biannual conference of the International Society for Third Sector Research (ISTR) in Bangkok. ISTR is an international association that promotes research and education on civil society, philanthropy and the nonprofit sector. Several hundred scholars from more than 30 countries will attend. Among ISTR's institutional members are Amnesty International, UCLA Center for Civil Society, The Aspen Institute Nonprofit Sector Research Fund and other leading civil society organizations.

The theme of this year's conference is "Civil Society and Human Security." The opening will be presided over by Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, princess of Thailand and a long-time supporter of non-profit organizations.

The University of Iowa is committed to helping to strengthen the non-profit and charitable sector in the state of Iowa. The university's Larned A. Waterman Iowa Nonprofit Resource Center provides management consulting services to the state's non-profit organizations and also worked with the Governor's Task Force on Charitable Nonprofit Organizations to create the Iowa Principles and Practices of Charitable Nonprofit Excellence.
