Twenty-seven talented junior-high and high-school students attended the All-State Percussion Camp June 18-23 at the University of Iowa School of Music.

Part of the YAMAHA "Sounds of Summer" national clinics, the All-State Percussion Camp offered students the opportunity to experience a week in the life of Iowa Percussion, the performance arm of the UI School of Music percussion area. Students explored a wide variety of topics including concert performance, marching, jazz, and world percussion.

Instruction was offered by some of the top specialists in the country in a "total percussion" setting. UI percussion area head and camp director Dan Moore was joined by Nashville recording artist and steel pan specialist Mat Britain; UI percussion and jazz faculty member James Dreier; keyboard percussionist Ginny Armstrong; and UI Hawkeye Marching Band drumline instructor Ernest Jennings. The YAMAHA "Sounds of Summer" clinician was Jim Campbell from the University of Kentucky.

The camp closed with a percussion concert/demonstration on Friday, June 23.

An internationally known percussionist, composer and teacher, Moore has experience from concert to marching percussion, and from jazz to classical styles. Performing all aspects of percussion, including keyboard percussion, drum set, ethnic, multi-percussion and electronic instruments, he is considered a "total percussionist." See:
