MEDIA ADVISORY: Wing Available For Palestinian Election Comment
Adrien Wing, a University of Iowa law professor and an expert on Israeli/Palestinian relations, will be available to the media to comment on today's Palestinian elections. She can be contacted directly at 319-335-9129 or 319-621-7674.
Wing has researched the Middle East for decades and visits the region often, most recently earlier this month. She's met many of the top Palestinian leaders and in the mid-1990s helped the Palestinian Authority draft its Basic Law, their guiding legal document that is similar to a constitution.
Wing's most recent trip to the Mideast took her to Tel Aviv, Haifa, Dimona, Beersheva, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Ramallah and Nablus, cities in both Israel and the Palestinian Territories. She said she believes that this is a critical moment in Israeli/Palestinian history because of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's recent stroke, and the fact that no current Israeli leader has the stature to replace Sharon and his role in the Kadima Party, the new moderate political party he recently formed after breaking from the conservative Likud Party. Sharon's departure from the political scene will also affect today's election as a new factor in an already dangerous mix because Hamas, an Islamist political party, may gain a substantial percentage of the votes over the current majority party, the secular Fatah Party.
