'The World' Wins Prestigious 2006 DuPont-Columbia Award

Iowa Public Radio station KSUI has announced that the nationally syndicated news program, "The World" has won a 2006 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award for excellence in journalism.

The one-hour, global news magazine is broadcast at 5 p.m. Monday through Friday on KSUI FM 91.7. Christopher Merrill, director of the University of Iowa's International Writing Program, is international literary critic for "The World."

A co-production of Public Radio International (PRI), BBC World Service and WGBH Radio Boston, "The World" won the coveted award for its four-part series "The Global Race for Stem Cell Therapies," an examination of the scientific promise and ethical dilemmas of stem cell research around the world.

"KSUI is very proud to offer "The World" to our listeners. With great breadth of focus, "The World" examines current events, politics and culture -- all the complexities of life, whether those complexities involve individual communities, nations or, indeed, the entire world. We feel this program is especially well-suited to the KSUI audience because of its heavy focus on art and music. We're also very proud the UI's own Christopher Merrill is "The World's" literary critic!" said KSUI Program Director Joan Kjaer.

PRI's "The World" is broadcast on-air and streamed online by 200 PRI affiliate stations and heard by 2 million listeners nationwide. Offering a mix of news, features, interviews, and music from around the globe, "The World" is the only American radio program devoted exclusively to global affairs.

The World will receive the duPont-Columbia Award's silver baton at an awards ceremony held Jan. 18, at Columbia University. The World was one of 13 award winners chosen from over 620 radio and television news entries that aired in the U.S. between July 1, 2004, and June 30, 2005.
