Registration Begins For Youth Entrepreneur Camp

This summer, Eastern Iowa kids can learn entrepreneurial skills that last a lifetime at the University of Iowa's Youth Entrepreneur Camp.

Sponsored by John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center (JPEC) and Hills Bank and Trust Company, this week-long camp shows students in grades 4-6 what it's like to start a business through classroom and practical experience. Now in its 11th year, the Youth Entrepreneur Camp has given hundreds of children valuable skills in business.

Students can register now for the camp, which runs July 10-14, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily in the John Pappajohn Business Building in Iowa City. During the camp, students will:

* Meet successful area entrepreneurs

* Identify the basic skills required of entrepreneurs

* Learn how to market a product or service

* Determine profit potential for a new venture

* Develop a plan to start their own business

"This camp helps kids take a kernel of an idea and start to develop it into a business plan. Presentations from successful entrepreneurs help them see the potential of their ideas," said JPEC director David Hensley. "Developing entrepreneurial skills is something that will be beneficial to them throughout their entire lives, whatever their career path may be."

The user-friendly course materials are designed specifically for youth, and include activities to stimulate interest in the various aspects of entrepreneurship.

Registrations received by May 5 will receive priority consideration. The cost is $149, which includes bus transportation for tours to business sites, class materials, snacks, lunches and graduation reception. Several scholarships are available for those in need. Those who register before April 22 will receive $20 off the normal fee.
