UI Art Education Faculty Williams Will Lead Tour At Museum Of Art Feb. 26

University of Iowa Professor of Art Education Rachel Williams will lead a tour through the galleries of the UI Museum of Art (UIMA) at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26.

The tour will focus on the paintings currently on display at the museum, in particular works of painters associated with the New York School. It will be free and open to the public.

"I will be taking people on an interpretive walk through the museum's painting collection to learn how meanings in art can shift over time," Williams said. "As a group we will be playing an interactive game and then having a discussion around a few key pieces of the collection."

Williams holds an MFA in studio art and a Ph.D. in art education. She has published articles in the Journal of Arts Management, Law and Society and the Journal of Poetry Therapy, among other scholarly journals. She is also the author of the book "Teaching the Arts Behind Bars."

For more than a decade Williams has worked as an art educator and researcher with incarcerated populations, including juveniles. She is particularly interested in ethnography, visual culture, community-based art education, women's studies and program evaluation. Recently she completed a series of large ceramic murals at the Montana State Prison, based on workshops she facilitated with the inmates. Her current research is focused on using graphic novels to explore human rights with secondary students and English teachers.

The UI Museum of Art, located on North Riverside Drive in Iowa City, is open noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. Admission is free. Public metered parking is available in UI parking lots west and north of the museum.
