UI Students Explore Chicago Career Prospects
Several Tippie College of Business undergraduate students joined other University of Iowa students to learn more about business-related opportunities in the downtown Chicago financial district Feb. 3 as part of the Big 10+ Diversity on LaSalle St. program.
During the trip, the 15 sophomore and junior students saw the opening of the Chicago Board of Trade and met with representatives of several downtown Chicago companies, such as Boeing, LaSalle Bank, Accenture and Wrigley. Students from all of the Big Ten schools participated, including non-conference schools University of Chicago and DePaul University. The trip was sponsored by the UI's Pomerantz Career Center.
"The Pomerantz Career Center was very excited to take part in the Diversity on LaSalle Street program this year. It was a great way to provide excellent networking opportunities for students, and employers were able to see the caliber of students who will be graduating from the university and entering the workforce soon," said Angi Schumacher, director of marketing and public relations for the Center.
The trip also included a breakfast, networking lunch and reception. During the day, students visited two companies where they learned more information about the organization, as well as the company's employment and internship opportunities.
"The Diversity on LaSalle Street event was a very positive experience. There is no better way to learn about a company than to see it first-hand. I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to see three great organizations, including the Chicago Board of Trade, McGladrey and Pullen, and Accenture. I was able to gain valuable insight about the three companies and network with both professionals and other students. The trip was an extremely valuable learning experience, and I believe it will significantly impact my future career plans," said Cole Grolmus, a junior Management Information Systems major.
"Diversity on LaSalle St. was a great opportunity to gain insight about what the internal culture of corporate America is all about," added business student Bobby Barcelo.
