Pella Corp. CEO Speaks At Tippie College Feb. 16

Mel Haught, president and CEO of Pella Corp., will speak Thursday, Feb. 16 at the Tippie College of Business about leadership and his experiences in the business world.

The speech, part of the Pearson Lecture Series, is scheduled for 1 p.m. Feb. 16 in Room W10 in the Pappajohn Business Building on the University of Iowa campus.

Pella Corp. headquartered in Pella, Iowa, is a world leader in the design, manufacture, marketing and sales of premium-quality windows and doors. For seven straight years, Pella has been named one of Fortune magazine's "100 Best Companies to Work For." This year, the company was ranked No. 44 -- the only privately owned Iowa company and one of the few manufacturers on the list.

In 1993, Haught, who was then director of operations, introduced the company to the continuous improvement business philosophy, which takes time and cost out of the production system, while improving overall quality and productivity. Pella has since become a leader in implementing continuous improvement, which is used in all its departments.

Haught has been president and CEO of Pella since Dec. 31, 2002. Prior to assuming this leadership position, he was the executive vice president and Pella Division president and chief operating officer. He was appointed to the Pella Corporation Board of Directors in May 1999.

Haught earned his bachelor of science degree in education in 1968 from Youngstown State University in Ohio. After graduation, he taught for a year in Warren, Ohio, before working 14 years at General Motors, Packard Electric Division. He then had several senior-level assignments at Molex Incorporated, including nine years as the director of human resources and vice president of operations. Haught joined Pella Corporation in 1991 as vice president of manufacturing.

A 2002 graduate of the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Business School, Haught currently serves on the boards of several corporate and educational advisory boards. He is a member of the Tippie College of Business' Board of Visitors.
