Family Art Activity Kicks Off 2007 Calendar At UI Museum of Art

The University of Iowa Museum of Art (UIMA) will host its first family-centered event of 2007, "View and DO: A Family Art Activity," 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6.

"View and DO" family art activities offer child-adult teams a chance to explore historical ideas or design concepts through tours of the gallery and related activities. Each session starts with Molly Vadnis, a graduate student in art education, providing an introduction to a selection of artworks in the UIMA. Afterwards, participants do a hands-on arts activity for kids and adults based on the artworks viewed.

In this session, "Gesture and Geometry," attendees will discuss selected works in the museum's galleries, and then each child and adult team will make two artworks.

"Younger kids are really eager to create -- they are fearless and they really just let it fly," says Dale Fisher, the museum's director of education. "Parents really get into it too. They are really surprised at how their kids engage with and interpret the art."

The activity is especially geared towards children ages 6-10 and their parent, grandparent, or adult caregiver. Each child must be accompanied by one adult.

"View and DO: A Family Art Activity" is open to the public and costs $10 per child and adult team. For registration information, please call 319-335-1730.

The UI Museum of Art, located on North Riverside Drive in Iowa City, is open noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, and noon to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Admission is free. Public metered parking is available in UI parking lots west and north of the museum.
