Diplomats Of Solid Sound Perform On Iowa Public Radio's New 'Java Blend' Show

The Diplomats of Solid Sound, Iowa's self-proclaimed "ambassadors of instrumental soul," will give a free performance at Iowa City's Java House on Friday, Dec. 22, as part of the new "Java Blend" series on Iowa Public Radio. The performance, which is to be broadcast in January 2007, begins at noon and is open to the public at no charge.

"Java Blend" is the new name for "Talk of Iowa Live from The Java House," a broadcast hosted by Iowa Public Radio's Ben Kieffer that has featured Midwest and nationally known artists since 2001. "Java Blend" offers an eclectic mix of live music from the vibrant independent music scene, featuring artists from around the state and around the country. Kieffer will infuse the performances with lively chats to find out about the artists' music and lives.

On the Dec. 22 taping, the Diplomats will be joined by their newfound soul sisters The Diplomettes. The three-girl soul trio joined the band in July 2006 for what began as a one-time show on the Iowa City Ped Mall. Now five months later, members Sarah Cram of Cedar Rapids, and Kathy Ruestow and Abbie Sawyer of Iowa City, have become full-fledged members, playing to crowds all over the Midwest. All three singers write original music, and their work will be featured on an upcoming album with The Diplomats.

Future editions of the "Java Blend will also be taped at noon on Fridays before a live audience at the Java House, located at 211 E. Washington St. in downtown Iowa City. Occasionally, the show will be taken on the road to be recorded at other venues around the state.

The hour will be broadcast statewide multiple times on a future weekend to an estimated 50,000 Iowa Public Radio listeners. Stations include KUNI Cedar Falls/Waterloo/Cedar Rapids/Iowa City, KUNY/KRNI Mason City, KDMR Des Moines, KDUB Dubuque, WSUI Iowa City/Cedar Rapids, WOI Ames/Des Moines, KTPR Fort Dodge, KOWI Lamoni, and KWOI Carroll. For broadcast times, see and scroll to "Java Blend."

The program will also be videotaped for several TV broadcasts on the UITV cable channel in the Iowa City and Cedar Rapids area. The audio version also can be heard worldwide on the Internet via the respective stations' live webcasting. Podcasts of the show will be available by going to
