WSUI's 'Big Brain' Explores Music And Memories

Have you ever heard a song that instantly transported you back to a particular moment in your life? The next broadcast of "Big Brain" on Iowa Public Radio station WSUI-AM 910 on Thursday, Dec. 21 will explore how music can activate our memories.

The show is broadcast live from the Iowa City Public Library at 123 South Linn St. in Iowa City from 10 to 11 a.m. Host Ben Kieffer will welcome pianist and composer Dan Knight along with the library's Maeve Clark. Callers and audience members will share songs that take them back to a memorable time, recount that special past moment, and Knight will then play their song live. Clark will also share information about how memory works.

Listeners call in with other questions during the hour (toll-free 1-866-780-9100) or e-mail them in advance to with the subject line Big Brain. The public is also invited to join the audience at the ICPL.

Knight, a pianist and Steinway artist who lives in Iowa City, can play from a large repertoire of music. He is a leading improvising musician at the forefront of the modern classical movement. His compositions are frequently inspired by masterworks of visual art, and his performances of these modern classical suites, which include "Pictures at an Exhibition" and "From Corot to Picasso," have received both national and international acclaim.
