Community Program Sept. 20 To Focus On Childhood Obesity

Childhood obesity, and what parents and children can do about it, will be the focus of a special community program from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, at Coral Ridge Mall in Coralville.

Presented by Children's Hospital of Iowa at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, this two-part program will feature a seminar for parents and educational activities for kids.

The seminar for parents will be held in the Community Room at Coral Ridge Mall. Patricia Donohoue, M.D., and Michael Tansey, M.D., both of Children's Hospital of Iowa, will present, "Childhood Obesity: What Can You Do?" This presentation will include discussion of:

-- How obesity is diagnosed in children

-- How common is obesity?

-- The reasons behind childhood obesity

-- Some simple changes parents and children can make

The children's portion of the program, geared toward kids ages 5-17, will be held at the Iowa Children's Museum at Coral Ridge Mall and will include:

-- "Now That's A Healthy Snack!" - A hands-on demonstration making a healthy and tasty snack, complete with tasting and recipes to take home. Presented by UI Hospitals and Clinics Food and Nutrition Services.

There is an epidemic of childhood obesity in the United States and throughout the world. These children face a higher risk much earlier in life of developing obesity-related disorders such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, stroke and some cancers.

Studies have shown that overweight adolescents have a 70 percent chance of becoming overweight or obese adults - all the more reason why parents should encourage kids to develop healthy eating habits and remain physically active throughout childhood.

This program is free and open to the public. Registration is limited. For more information or to register, call UI Health Access at 319-384-8442 or toll free 800-777-8442.

Part of the "Health For Your Lifetime" series presented by UI Hospitals and Clinics, this special program is supported in part by Kohl's and is presented in partnership with Coral Ridge Mall and the Iowa Children's Museum.
