Frazee Reads On WSUI "Live From Prairie Lights" Series Sept. 6

Patti Frazee of the Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis will read from her debut novel, "Cirkus," at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, "Live from Prairie Lights" series, hosted by Julie Englander on University of Iowa radio station WSUI-AM 910.

The broadcast will originate at a free event in the Prairie Lights bookstore at 15 S. Dubuque St. in downtown Iowa City. Listen on the Internet at

"Cirkus" is a tale about an immigrant circus traveling the Midwest in the summer of 1900. Frazee's characters, who include conjoined twins and other "freaks," are far from their homelands and often sharply different from the people for whom they perform.

Susan Power, an alumna of the UI Writers' Workshop and the author of "Roofwalker" and "The Grass Dancer," called the book, "a feast of words and dreams. Frazee's women are passionate spirits as vivid as those in the best fairytales, and still are real -- their experiences a raw truth."

Frazee, who was born in Red Oak, Iowa, and raised in Nebraska, teaches at the Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis. She received an honorable mention from the Astraea Lesbian Foundation's Justice 2005 Emerging Lesbian Writer's Fund. She is also the communications coordinator for the First Universalist Church in Minneapolis, and had an earlier career as an actress.
