UI Volunteer Fair Connects Campus, Community
The University of Iowa will sponsor a campus-wide volunteer fair on Wednesday, Aug. 30, to connect students, faculty and staff with local service organizations. The fair will be held from noon to 4 p.m. in the second-floor ballroom of the Iowa Memorial Union. Nearly 60 area service groups will be available to provide information and sign up volunteers.
"Our goal is to connect with our community-based organizations and to introduce as many individuals as possible to exciting volunteer opportunities and potential service learning partnerships," said Mary Mathew Wilson, coordinator of the UI Civic Engagement Program.
A substantial number of UI students, faculty members and staff participate in the local, state, national and international communities through volunteerism and service learning. The university is actively supporting the creation of service-learning courses, which help students learn course content by partnering with community organizations that address a variety of community needs.
Among the organizations expected to be present at the Volunteer Fair are civic and government organizations, educational and child care organizations, art and cultural organizations, historical groups and groups that provide services to people who are poor, ill, disabled or victims of violence.
The fair is co-sponsored by the UI Student Government, the 10,000 Hours Show, the Office of the Provost, the Office of the Vice President for Student Services, the Office of Student Life and the Civic Engagement Program.
