Events Welcome New, Returning Students To UI
The University of Iowa will welcome its incoming first-year class and returning students with a week of activities starting Saturday, Aug. 19. Included on the schedule are movies, free ice cream and the traditional Night Games.

Saturday, Aug. 19.
--Movie Night @ IMU. "Ghost World," starring Thora Birch and Scarlett Johansson. 8 p.m., Bijou Theatre, Illinois Room, Iowa Memorial Union.
Sunday, Aug. 20.
--Hawkeye Welcome Cookout. Free barbecue, prizes and music. 4:30 to 7 p.m., Hubbard Park (rain site: Iowa Memorial Union).

Monday, Aug. 21.
--Campus Directions Booths. Help for newcomers in finding their way around campus is available on the Pentacrest (east side), T. Anne Cleary Walkway and Hubbard Park. 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Tuesday, Aug. 22
--Campus Directions Booths. Pentacrest (east side), T. Anne Cleary Walkway and Hubbard Park. 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
--Kick-Off Classic. Learn more about recreational activities at UI, including intramurals, fitness, outdoor programs and more. 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Hubbard Park.
--The Money Game. An interactive game that teaches students about automatic savings and investing plans, minimizing student loans and credit cards, and the greatest asset students have on their side: time. Two UI students in attendance will win $250 University Bill grants. 7 p.m., Second Floor Ballroom, IMU.
Wednesday, Aug. 23
--Student Involvement Fair and Ice Cream Social. Connects local organizations with students. Free ice cream is available. 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Hubbard Park (rain site: Second Floor Ballroom, IMU).
--Get Hypnotized! Hypnotist-comedian Chuck Milligan performs. 8 p.m., Second Floor Ballroom, IMU.
Thursday, Aug. 24
--Student Job Fair. An opportunity for students interested in part-time hourly and work-study employment to meet with employers. 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Second Floor Ballroom, IMU.
--Community of Color: Getting Connected. A welcome reception for students, staff, faculty and community. 4 to 7 p.m., Currier Hall, Van Oel Multi-Purpose Room.
--Lecture, "The Yes Men." The Yes Men are an anonymous group of culture-jamming activists who use a tactic called "identity correction" that involves impersonating high-level corporate officials. They do this to admit the truth, as the Yes Men see it, about unethical activities engaged in by the corporations they claim to represent. The public face of the Yes Men, Andy Bichlbaum, will give a lively multimedia presentation on the group's activities, to be followed by a panel discussion about media pranks moderated by Communication Studies Professor Kembrew McLeod. 7:30 p.m., Shambaugh Auditorium, Main Library.
Friday, Aug. 25
--College Movement Tour 2006. Celebrate the end of the first week of classes with a night of live music at the new River Patio. The College Movement Tour brings 4 indie bands to the university and free ice cream will be served. 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., River Patio, IMU (rain site: Second Floor Ballroom, IMU).
Saturday, Aug. 26
--Saturday in the Park. A showcase for the university's recreational clubs and organizations, it offers free lunch, free swimming, great giveaways, and the opportunity to meet representatives from Women's Rugby, motorcycle enthusiasts, and more! 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., City Park.
--Night Games. A free late night event open to the public with a variety of recreational sports and activities, including rock climbing, swimming, basketball, badminton, volleyball, racquetball and special events. 9 p.m to 1 a.m., Field House.
