Peek-Asa To Speak On Traumatic Injury Aug. 24

Corinne Peek-Asa, Ph.D., University of Iowa professor of occupational and environmental health and internationally recognized injury control scholar, will deliver the 2006-07 UI College of Public Health Distinguished Faculty Lecture on Thursday, Aug. 24.

Peek-Asa's presentation, "Traumatic Injury: Reducing the Global Burden," will take place at 3:30 p.m. in Room 2117 of the Medical Education and Research Facility (MERF). The lecture is free and open to the public.

More than five million people die from traumatic injuries throughout the world each year, accounting for nine percent of the world's deaths and 12 percent of the burden of disease. In the United States, injuries are estimated to cost $406 billion in medical care costs and lost productivity each year.

In her presentation, Peek-Asa will describe how and why the global burden of injury is disproportionately distributed. She will also present current trends that will influence future injury rates and identify public health priorities for prevention.

Peek-Asa is the director of the UI Injury Prevention Research Center and also the director of the Fogarty Trauma and Violence Prevention Training Program in Central Europe. This program builds infrastructure for violence and injury prevention in Croatia, Serbia, Macedonia, Bosnia and Romania.

She has received more than $1 million in research funding to study diverse topics such as motor vehicle safety, domestic violence, violence in the workplace, residential fire safety and disaster epidemiology, with a focus on rural populations.

Peek-Asa earned a master of public health degree and doctoral degree in epidemiology from the University of California at Los Angeles School of Public Health. She joined the UI College of Public Health in 2001.
