Two 2006 University Of Iowa Graduates Awarded Rotary Scholarships
Brett Johnson of Coralville and Abbie Sawyer of Des Moines, both 2006 graduates of the University of Iowa, have won Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships. These prestigious awards of up to $26,000 provide funding for one year of study in another country, and for the winners to serve as ambassadors of good will to the host country.
Brett Johnson graduated from the UI with a degree in Spanish and an honors degree in religious studies. In his host country -- Brazil, Honduras, Peru or Costa Rica -- Brett will study the culture of the coffee economy, including the Fair Trade movement and the relation between environment and people in coffee-growing regions. He plans to complete a research project and a documentary film.
Abbie Sawyer graduated from the UI with a degree in literature, science, and the arts, an honors degree in journalism and a minor in Spanish. Her plan of study is to complete a master's program in journalism at her host university, with a larger goal of telling the untold stories of marginalized groups. Her host country will be one of the following: New Zealand, Ireland, England or the Philippines.
