UI To Conduct Native Prairie Burn Wednesday
The University of Iowa's grounds staff will conduct a prairie burn on a site along Hawkins Drive, west of the Ronald McDonald House, on Wednesday, April 5. The burn will start around 8:30 a.m., weather permitting.
The burn will help to eliminate some woody vegetation that is encroaching on the site and to rid the areas of the buildup of foliage that accumulates over time, according to Shawn Fitzpatrick, grounds supervisor for UI Campus Shops, which is part of Facilities Management.
Burning is a preferred management practice over mowing, Fitzpatrick says, because more unwanted vegetation is removed and the prairie is made more vigorous by the burn. The university has obtained a burn permit from the Iowa City Fire Department.
