Osterhaus Honored By American Pharmacists Association
Matthew Osterhaus, a 1980 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy and an adjunct faculty member in the college, has been named the recipient of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Good Government Pharmacist of the Year Award.
The award, established in 1990, recognizes an individual pharmacist who actively contributes to his or her community through involvement in the political process. Osterhaus received the award at the APhA's annual meeting, held March 17-21 in San Francisco.
Osterhaus owns and operates Osterhaus Pharmacy in Maquoketa. He serves as a preceptor in pharmaceutical care for doctor-of-pharmacy (Pharm.D.) students. The preceptorships are residency programs that provide specialized clinical skills to students in a community pharmacy setting. Osterhaus has operated an APhA/American Society of Health System Pharmacists-accredited community practice residency since 1999, and he currently chairs the APhA Community Pharmacy Residency Advisory Panel.
Osterhaus is a board member of the Outcomes Certified Pharmaceutical Care Network, and he has been instrumental in furthering community-based pharmacy research in Iowa. He served on the Iowa Medicaid Drug Utilization Review Commission from 1985-2000 and the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners from 1993-2002.
Osterhaus currently serves as chair of the board of trustees of the Iowa Pharmacy Association. He also serves on the board of directors of the Pharmacists Mutual Insurance Company, the board of governors of Outcomes Pharmaceutical Healthcare and the Iowa Medicaid Pharmaceutical and Therapeutics Committee.
