'Take Back the Night' Scheduled For Oct. 6

The Women's Resource and Action Center's (WRAC) will sponsor the annual "Take Back the Night" march and rally on Thursday, Oct. 6, beginning at approximately 9:15 p.m. on the Pentacrest. The event is free and open to the public.

According to the U.S. Justice Department's Bureau of Justice Statistics, every two minutes a woman in the United States is raped. Approximately 28 percent of victims are raped by husbands or boyfriends, 35 percent by acquaintances and 5 percent by other relatives.

In response to this reality, "Take Back the Night" rallies and marches were initially established in Europe in the 1970s. The purpose of these events was to protest the unsafe conditions for women on the streets at night. Iowa City was one of the first communities in the United States to hold a "Take Back the Night" event; rallies and marches continue to be held in many communities throughout the United States as an expression of solidarity with, and support for, survivors of sexual violence.

This year's "Take Back the Night" is a community and individual expression of commitment to work for greater safety for everyone. Organized by WRAC's Iowa Women Initiating Social Change (IWIS) volunteers, the event is designed to be uplifting and empowering for all participants. The march and rally will include music and speakers from both the campus and community. Additionally, survivors of sexual violence will have the opportunity to break the silence and give voice to their experiences.
