Statement by University of Iowa President David Skorton
September 24, 2005
It is deeply offensive and completely unacceptable that a spirited public discussion about the pink locker rooms at Kinnick Stadium has been degraded by threats of violence. I ask that the entire University of Iowa community, including alumni and supporters, join me in condemning those threats.
The University of Iowa administration welcomes an open and civilized debate on this issue. However, threats of violence will not be tolerated. For that reason, today I am asking the Office of the General Counsel, the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity, and the Department of Public Safety to review these threats and to take appropriate actions based on their findings.
As we go forward, it is appropriate to remind everyone of our core values, including the vigilant protection of free expression - for people on both sides of this issue. I ask everyone who takes an interest in this debate to recommit themselves to the principles of honesty, fairness, personal integrity and civility.
