UIHC Sends Katrina Relief, Readies Volunteers
Donna Katen-Bahensky, director and CEO of University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, today praised faculty and staff for their leadership in responding to the devastation left by Hurricane Katrina along the nation's Gulf Coast.
Faculty, staff, patients, their families, other UI staff members and local community members who heard about UIHC's collection efforts contributed to its special donation drive last Friday. Volunteers collected approximately 45 pallets of bottled water, diapers, cleaning supplies and other donated goods, along with more than $21,000 to assist with the relief effort in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The Lowe's Corporation matched that amount, enabling UIHC to make a donation to the American Red Cross that totaled $42,000. The Office of Community and Patient Relations (8JCP) continues to accept cash and checks to the American Red Cross to help the people of the Gulf Coast region.
"We are very proud of the caring and commitment of our entire community," said Katen-Bahensky. "All of us are dedicated to doing whatever we can to help everyone affected by this catastrophe."
In addition, 121 specialists with University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics have volunteered to assist evacuees from the devastation left by Hurricane Katrina along the Gulf Coast of the United States.
The team consists of nurses, physicians, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, and many other specialties. Leaders at UI Hospitals and Clinics remain in constant communication with the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), which is coordinating the state's response to the Gulf Coast disaster. The UI volunteers are currently on call to respond to directives from IDPH.
