Nov. 11 'Live From Prairie Lights' Broadcast Samples 'Prairie Weather'
Contributors Jim Heynen, Mary Swander and Amy Kolen will read from "Prairie Weather," edited by University of Iowa alumnus Steve Semken at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11 in the Prairie Lights bookstore at 15 S. Dubuque St. in downtown Iowa City. The free reading will be on the "Live from Prairie Lights" broadcasts on UI radio station WSUI, AM 910, hosted by Julie Englander. "Prairie Weather," which features an introduction by KCRG-TV meteorologist Denny Frary, is part of the Harvest Book series from Semken's Ice Cube Press, published in conjunction with Harvest Lecture events. The Harvest Lecture is an annual event exploring ties among spirituality, Midwestern landscape and the environment.
Semken's books include "The Great Blues," "Moving With the Elements," "River Tips and Tree Trunks," "Northern Spirits Distilled" and "The Tin Prayer: Words of the Wolverine." He contributed to the recent collection "Living With Topsoil," edited by Swander.
Swander, a UI Writers' Workshop alumna, teaches at Iowa State University. Heynen is also a UI alumnus, and among his many books is "Harker's Barns," published by the UI Press. Kolen, a writing consultant for the MBA program in the UI Tippie College of Business, had her work published in "The Best American Essays of 2002."
The Writers' Workshop is an academic unit of the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
