UI Health, Wellness And Safety Fair To Feature Fire, Frostbite Prevention
A flame-resistant mattress and frostbite prevention kits are just two of the special features presented by staff from the Burn Treatment Center at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics during the UI Health, Wellness and Safety Fair from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2 in the UI Field House.
The fair is open to the general public with an expected attendance of more than 5,000 people.
The display provided by the staff from the Burn Treatment Center (BTC) will focus on burn prevention and frostbite awareness. BTC staff will introduce the "Fireblocker" mattress that is resistant to open flames. Specialists say this type of mattress should help save many lives. Fairgoers may enter a drawing for the mattress, and the manufacturer, Serta, also will donate a bed to the family of a patient who has survived burn injuries.
BTC staff also will remind the attendees at the fair to use flame-resistant sleepwear for their children. Not all children's sleepwear is flame resistant, and it is very important for parents to read the clothing labels.
In addition, the staff from the BTC will assemble winter emergency survival kits for people to keep in their motor vehicles. The packets will help prevent frostbite injuries or other severe problems if travelers become stranded in cold weather. Items in the kits include: battery cables, flashlight with batteries, blanket, ice scraper, hand warmers, gloves, hats, a small bag of melting salt, bottled water and a help sign.
The following local businesses generously donated the items for the BTC display: Bill Kinneer's America's Mattress, Coralville; Serta National, Chicago, Ill.; Kohl's Department Stores; Paul's, Iowa City; Scheel's All Sports, Coralville; O'Reilly Auto Parts, Iowa City; Advance Auto Parts, Iowa City; All Seasons Automotive, North Liberty; Premier Automotive Inc., North Liberty; Car X Auto Service, Iowa City; Auto Zone, Iowa City; Orscheln Farm & Home Supply, Iowa City; Hy-Vee, Iowa City; Off-Campus Conoco, Coralville; Iowa Fire Equipment, Iowa City; Wal-Mart, Iowa City; Carquest, Coralville; Hy-Vee, Coralville; Midwest Wheel Companies.
