Small Business Development Director Earns 'State Star' Award

Paul Heath, director of the Small Business Development Center at the University of Iowa, was recently named the 2005 Iowa "State Star" by the Association of Small Business Development Centers, Burke, Va.

Heath is part of the Iowa Small Business Development Centers (SBDC), an outreach unit of Iowa State University's College of Business. The Iowa SBDC partners with other Board of Regents, State of Iowa, universities and nine community colleges.

The SBDC at the UI works closely with the university's Henry B. Tippie College of Business and the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center. The center's programming helps business people develop the skills and knowledge needed to manage, finance and operate small businesses.

Heath, a 20-year employee of the Iowa SBDC, was nominated by his associates for  the honor. The event was held Sept. 9 in Baltimore, Md. In addition to the recognition, Heath also will be part of a "State Stars" publication showcasing awardees.

Jon Ryan, Iowa SBDC state director, said Heath has earned a statewide reputation as a small business advocate and financial counselor.

"Paul has been a strong, steady and creative leader within the Iowa SBDC program," Ryan said. "He continues to handle his center with exceptional administrative ability, and he participates in a variety of statewide programs that are of value to Iowans. Typical of the SBDC's directors, Paul is a valued part of Iowa's growing economy."

The national association annually recognizes SBDC employees for demonstrating a strong work performance, contributing to the SBDC's economic development efforts and committing their time and talents to small businesses.

Past recipients include Ryan; Lars Peterson, West Des Moines, associate state director; and regional directors from Des Moines, Mason City and Waterloo.

The UI SBDC is part of the Iowa Centers for Enterprise, Business and Commercialization Services, which integrates existing economic development activities at the UI.  Iowa Centers for Enterprise, Business and Commercializations Services offers a comprehensive program that promotes economic development and technology transfer, provides assistance to Iowa startups and existing Iowa businesses and communities, and helps the state of Iowa develop a creative, entrepreneurial workforce. Also, Iowa Centers for Enterprise programs optimize the flow of university intellectual property into opportunities for licensing, commercialization and business development.
