UI Honored By Washington Center Internship Program

The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars recently honored the University of Iowa as a Distinguished Affiliate, an award given to only 30 institutions among the 1,000 colleges and universities that participate in the Washington Center program in the U.S.

Washington Center board chairman Ambassador Alan J. Blinken and Center President Michael B. Smith presented the award at the Center's 30th anniversary gala this fall in Washington, D.C. at The Corcoran Gallery of Art. Announcing the award, Judith Gill, chancellor of the Board of Higher Education in Massachusetts, cited the UI as "one of the schools doing the very best job of making available to their students the opportunities the Center offers." It has "far-sighted leaders at the top who support the program and an able, dedicated campus liaison who makes it work for students," she said.

"The University of Iowa is a valued and long-standing partner," said Joseph Johnston, senior vice president at The Washington Center. "It sends capable, well-prepared students, who compete well for placements in a wide array of internships with governmental, nonprofit, business or international organizations."

Representing the UI and receiving the award was UI's Center liaison David Fitzgerald (right), director of experiential education at the UI's Pomerantz Career Center.

The UI Washington Center Internship Program enables students from all majors to earn up to 15 hours credit for internships in Washington, D.C. Founded in 1975, the Washington Center is a non-partisan, nonprofit organization which offers internships with more than 1,000 public, private and nonprofit agencies. UI students have been placed at the White House and Congress, top government agencies and national media outlets. During a semester or summer term, students complete a tailored and substantive internship, an academic course, meet with members of Congress, and receive academic credit for their work.
