Tony Award-winning "Thoroughly Modern Millie" Comes To Hancher Dec. 10-11
"Thoroughly Modern Millie," winner of six Tony Awards including Best Musical, will come to the University of Iowa Hancher Auditorium for only three performances -- at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, and at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11.
"Thoroughly Modern Millie," based on the hit movie starring Julie Andrews, was 2002's most-awarded new Broadway show. ABC's Barbara Walters recommended: "Thoroughly Modern Mille is a wonderful show, great for the whole family. See it!"
"Thoroughly Modern Millie" takes audiences back to the midst of the Roaring Twenties, the uninhibited age of the Charleston, flappers and speakeasies. It's the story of a Midwestern girl who arrives in New York determined to take the town by storm -- and does.
USA Today's reviewer called "Millie" "a thoroughly delightful experience," and Time Out New York observed, "you can't see this kind of whirling, transporting pop entertainment anywhere else!"
The new stage version of "Thoroughly Modern Millie" features 15 songs, including two from the 1967 film, four standards from the 1920s and nine brand-new songs.
The result is a "flapper-filled, deco-drenched stage version" that "works so well . . . it is a wonder that it did not take ALL the Tonys," according to the critic for the Ft. Worth Telegram.
Millie's visit to Hancher is supported by Universal Climate Control, Thomas and Kathryn Nereim, owners; and Hills Bank and trust company, through the University of Iowa Foundation, with media support from KDAT-Fm.
