UI Museum Of Art Hosts Mexican Holiday Fiesta Dec. 3

The University of Iowa Museum of Art (UIMA) will host a "Mexican Holiday Fiesta" from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec 3.

"Mexican Holiday Fiesta" is free and the public is invited to attend. Traditional Mexican refreshments will be served.

"Mexican Holiday Fiesta" is part of an ongoing celebration of the arts and traditions of Mexico at the UIMA, presented in conjunction with the exhibition "Crafting Tradition: Oaxacan Wood Carvings." The exhibition presents more than 50 examples of the whimsical wood carvings for which the state of Oaxaca has become famous.

Organized by UI anthropology faculty member Michael Chibnik, the exhibition runs through March 12, 2006

As part of the celebration Dec. 3, performances will be presented in the museum by:

-- Eugenio Solis, performing Mexican folk songs at noon;

-- students from the Preucil School of Music at 1 p.m.;

-- Darwin T. Turner Action Theatre at 2 p.m.; and

-- Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre Company at 3 p.m.

There will be demonstrations of wood carving by Epifanio Fuentes and Laurencia Santiago, artisans from San Martin Tilcajete in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. Hands-on activities will be available and the museum store will be selling wood carvings from Oaxaca throughout the afternoon.

"Crafting Traditions" and related programming are supported by Iowa State Bank & Trust.

The UI Museum of Art, located on North Riverside Drive in Iowa City, is open noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. Admission is free. Public metered parking is available in UI parking lots west and north of the museum.
