Small Business Development Center Offers Franchise Seminar Nov. 14
Is a franchise business ownership right for you? At a seminar Nov. 14, the University of Iowa Small Business Development Center (SBDC) can help you decide if a franchise is the best way to start a business.
Joe Cooney, strategic franchise advisor of FranNet of the Heartlands will present the seminar from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 14 at US Bank, 204 E. Washington St. in Iowa City.
Topics to be discussed include:
-The definition, history and myths of franchising
-What a business owner gets when buying a franchise
-What a business owner gives when joining a franchise system
-The costs of franchise business ownership
-How to find what you want from franchise ownership
-How to thoroughly research a franchise
Cooney conducts dozens of seminars a year on franchising in conjunction with outplacement firms, Small Business Development Centers, local Chambers of Commerce as well as colleges and universities. In addition, he provides free consultation to prospective entrepreneurs in Iowa and Nebraska.

The UI SBDC works closely with the University's Henry B. Tippie College of Business and the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center. The center's programming helps business people develop the skills and knowledge needed to manage, finance, and operate small businesses. It is part of the Business and Commercialization Services, which integrates existing economic development activities at the UI.
The Iowa Centers for Enterprise offer a comprehensive program that promotes economic development and technology transfer, provide assistance to Iowa startups and existing Iowa businesses and communities, and helps the state of Iowa develop a creative, entrepreneurial workforce. Also, Iowa Centers for Enterprise programs optimize the flow of University intellectual property into opportunities for licensing, commercialization and business development.
