Des Moines Couple Creates Presidential Scholarship For UI Business Students
Larry P. Stelter and Peggy A. Fisher of Des Moines have made a $150,000 gift commitment to the University of Iowa Foundation to endow a student scholarship in the UI Henry B. Tippie College of Business.
The Larry Stelter and Peggy Fisher Presidential Scholarship will provide financial assistance for students in the UI Tippie College's Early Admission Program.
A 1970 graduate of the UI business school, Stelter is CEO of The Stelter Company, a Des Moines-based business that assists charitable organizations nationwide by producing and distributing direct-mail newsletters, collateral material and Internet-based products. Peggy Fisher, Stelter's spouse and a 1970 Drake University graduate, is The Stelter Company's chief operating officer.
"Neither of us, in our wildest dreams, thought we'd be in a position to assist talented UI students by making gifts of this size," Fisher said. "But we believe in higher education, and we believe anybody who receives an education has a duty to give back somehow."
In 2001, Stelter and Fisher also made a gift to the UI to establish the Paul J. Stelter Business Scholarship Fund, in memory of Stelter's father, The Stelter Company's founder.
"My colleagues and I really appreciate all of Larry Stelter and Peggy Fisher's support for the Tippie College of Business -- and their latest gift for the college's Early Admission Program," said Gary Fethke, dean of the college. "Helping students who are focused on careers in business -- and who have exceptional high school grades and ACT scores -- sends an important message. It says: 'We know you'll do well wherever you go, and we'd like you to come to the University of Iowa.'"
The gift from Stelter and Fisher is part of the UI's $1 billion comprehensive campaign, which will run through 2005 and is being conducted under the guidance of the UI Foundation. Named "Good. Better. Best. Iowa: The Campaign to Advance Our Great University," the seven-year effort is raising private funds to help launch a variety of initiatives across the university, substantially increase the number of UI scholarships and endowed faculty positions, support new educational and research facilities, build the UI's endowment and fund outreach and service programs to benefit Iowans.
The UI acknowledges the UI Foundation as the preferred channel for private contributions that benefit all areas of the university. For more information about the "Good. Better. Best. Iowa" campaign, visit its web site at www.GoodBetterBestIowa.org.
