Summer Entrepreneur Camp For Middle School Students Expanding
This summer, the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center (JPEC) is expanding its programming for business-minded students in grades six through eight. The Jacobson Entrepreneurship Academy will be offered in both Iowa City at the University of Iowa and in Des Moines at the Pappajohn Higher Education Center in Des Moines.
This is the first summer that JPEC has offered two sessions of the Jacobson Entrepreneurship Academy, which is sponsored by the Richard O. Jacobson Foundation. The first session will be held in Iowa City June 20-24 at the John Pappajohn Business Building on the UI campus. The second session will be held July 18-22 at the Pappajohn Higher Education Center, 1200 Grand Ave. in downtown Des Moines. The camp will be held daily from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at each location.
Throughout the week, campers will hear from nationally recognized entrepreneurs, tour local start-up companies and get hands-on instruction from UI entrepreneurship faculty. They will write their own business plans using BizTech, an online entrepreneurial learning program developed by the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship. At the end of the week, campers will present their businesses plans and compete for seed capital, cash prizes and recognition as a top young entrepreneur in Iowa.
The fee for the camp is $120 per student, which includes lunches, snacks, instruction, class materials, camp T-shirt, bus transportation for tours and the graduation reception. Camp participants are responsible for providing transportation to and from Iowa City and Des Moines. For Cedar Rapids students participating in the Iowa City program, transportation will be provided to Iowa City from a central Cedar Rapids location.
Several scholarships are available to those in need. Registration continues through May 6; applications received by April 22 will receive $20 off the normal fee. Registration materials are available at http://www.iowajpec.org/
