UI To Host Occupational Health Symposium March 31-April 1

The University of Iowa will host the seventh annual Occupational Health Symposium March 31-April 1 at the Sheraton Hotel in Iowa City.

The symposium, "New Dimensions in Health and Safety," will provide up-to-date information on health and safety in the workplace and offer networking opportunities. The symposium is designed for physicians, nurses, industrial hygienists, safety professionals, administrators, human resource professionals and other individuals interested in improving the health and safety of workers.

Topics to be addressed at the symposium include: OSHA respiratory protection standards in health care settings; occupational dermatitis; neurotoxic substances in the workplace; residential radon exposure; occupational asthma; ultra-fine particles in work settings; older workers and occupational health; ergonomics; the connection between health and productivity; musculoskeletal disorders in agricultural workers; injury prevention; respiratory exposures and personal protective equipment in farm workers; pesticide exposure and prevention; and leadership skills enhancement.

A pre-symposium course, "DOA: Drugs of Abuse Today," will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 30 at the Sheraton Hotel in Iowa City. This one-day workshop will provide up-to-date information on the toxicity and clinical management associated with contemporary substances of abuse. Abuse patterns, range of toxicity, clinical effects, overdose management and effects of substance abuse on the workplace will be discussed.

Symposium sponsors include the UI College of Public Health, UI College of Nursing, UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, the Heartland Center for Occupational Health and Safety, and WORKSAFE IOWA.

Continuing medical education credits are available for symposium attendees. Registration for the symposium will be available on-site during the event, but pre-registration is encouraged. More information and online registration is available at
