UI Schedules Dedication Of New Radiation Oncology Center June 17

University of Iowa leaders will host a special dedication ceremony for the new Center of Excellence in Image-Guided Radiation Therapy from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday, June 17, with remarks scheduled for 3 p.m.

The $39.6 million facility houses the world's most advanced radiation therapy options for the treatment of patients with cancer and some benign lesions. Located immediately west of the Pomerantz Family Pavilion at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (across from Kinnick Stadium), the center encompasses approximately 40,000 square feet.

Specializing in the delivery of image- and optic-guided stereotactic radiation, the center features technologies that lock on cancer sites with pinpoint accuracy and minimize contact with patients' healthy tissue. The precisely targeted treatments are delivered to within 0.7 millimeters rather than the traditional five to 15 millimeters. State-of-the-art imaging equipment creates three-dimensional representations of the patient. The center is the only one of its kind in the world to use computers for digital tracking throughout the treatment planning and delivery process available for all patients.

The center is part of an overall six-story, 218,000-square-foot structure, which also provides space for future growth and upcoming technologies.

Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center is Iowa's only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center. NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers are recognized as the leaders in developing new approaches to cancer prevention and cancer care, conducting leading edge research and educating the public about cancer.
