WSUI's 'Big Brain' Explores Music And Memories

Have you ever heard a song that instantly transported you back to a particular moment in your life? The next broadcast "Big Brain" on WSUI-AM 910 on Thursday, July 21 will explore how songs can activate our memories.

The show is broadcast live from the Iowa City Public Library at 123 South Linn St. in Iowa City from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Host Ben Kieffer will welcome pianist and composer Dan Knight along with Paul Ingram of Prairie Lights Bookstore and Maeve Clark of ICPL. Callers and audience members will share songs that take them back to a memorable time, recounting that special past moment, and Knight will then play their song live. The only condition is that they "pay" for the request with a personal memory that they associate with that song.

Listeners call in with other questions during the hour (toll-free 1-866-780-9100) or e-mail them in advance to with the subject line Big Brain. The public is also invited to join the audience at the ICPL.

Knight, a pianist and Steinway artist who lives in Iowa City, can play from a large repertoire of music. He is a leading improvising musician at the forefront of the modern "classical" movement. His compositions are frequently inspired by masterworks of visual art, and his performances of modern classical suites have received both national and international acclaim.

The Big Brain edition of "Talk of Iowa" can be heard on the University of Iowa's public radio station WSUI AM 910, from Iowa City/Cedar Rapids, WOI AM 640 from Ames/Des Moines, KTPR - FM  91.1 from Fort Dodge, KOWI FM 97.9 from Lamoni and KWOI FM 90.7 from Carroll.
