Renovated Burge Hall Market Place to Open
A three-year, $14.4 million renovation of Burge Market Place dining room in Burge Residence Hall will conclude with several days of activities the week of Jan. 17.
The completion will be acknowledged formally with a ribbon cutting on Wednesday, Jan. 19 at 3:30 p.m. with UI President David Skorton, Herky the Hawkeye and the Hawkeye Marching Band. Other events include student contests, movies and special dinner menus.
"Students have been telling us that they wanted greater variety of foods and more dining options, and this renovation addresses that request," Greg Black, director of campus food service.
The most significant change during the renovation was the conversion of the residence hall's dining room from a traditional cafeteria format to a food court format, following the trend in campus dining styles. Students have a variety of food styles to select from and they can watch the food prepared in front of them. The dining room's ambience is also warmer and more of a restaurant style.
"This is the same format we adopted for Hillcrest residence hall when we renovated the Hillcrest Market Place in 2000 and that was an immediate success with students," said Black. "For Burge Market Place, we took the Hillcrest model and made it even better to create a place that we think is truly state of the art."
Among the additional improvements made during the renovation are an expanded and remodeled Burge Hall lobby and information desks, and new building entrances.
