UI Pomerantz Center Receives $250,000 From John Deere Foundation
The new University of Iowa Pomerantz Center will benefit from a $250,000 grant in support of an Executive MBA classroom from the John Deere Foundation of Moline, Ill., the philanthropic arm of Deere & Company.
This grant, made through the UI Foundation, will help fund the $17.6 million facility, which is under construction on the UI campus and scheduled to open this spring. The building will house a variety of academic, career and recruiting programs for prospective and current students and alumni.
"For many years, the University of Iowa and John Deere have had a strong business-education partnership," said Jim Collins, president of the John Deere Foundation. "The John Deere Foundation wanted to support the UI Pomerantz Center's Executive MBA classrooms to ensure a better future for Iowa students and businesses. This gift was an important next step in our productive partnership."
Funded in part by a $10 million naming gift from Marvin A. and Rose Lee Pomerantz of Des Moines, the 70,000-square-foot Pomerantz Center is located across from the John Pappajohn Business Building at the corner of Market Street and the T. Anne Cleary Walkway, in the heart of the UI campus in Iowa City.
The building will serve a majority of UI undergraduates, including those in the UI's Henry B. Tippie College of Business, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering. The Pomerantz Center also will offer a variety of career-related services for UI students, including the Marvin A. and Rose Lee Pomerantz Career Services Program, MBA Career Services, the Executive MBA Program, the Admission Visitors Center, the UI Alumni Association's Career Information Network and the Academic Advising Center.
The John Deere Foundation invests in programs in education, health and human services, community improvement and arts and culture. Its grant is part of the UI's $1 billion comprehensive campaign, which will run through 2005 and is being conducted under the guidance of the UI Foundation. Named "Good. Better. Best. Iowa: The Campaign to Advance Our Great University," the seven-year effort is raising private funds to help launch a variety of initiatives across the university, substantially increase the number of UI scholarships and endowed faculty positions, support new educational and research facilities, build the UI's endowment and fund outreach and service programs to benefit Iowans.
