Iowa Alumni Magazine Wins Gold Medal For Articles
In December, the University of Iowa Alumni Association's Iowa Alumni Magazine received a gold medal in the Pride of CASE V awards sponsored by a regional group of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education.
The award for Excellence in Feature Writing/Series recognizes four "In Class" articles written by managing editor Tina Owen and associate editor Kathryn Howe. All the articles were about UI classes.
"Where's the Justice," published in the April 2005 issue was about Professor Alfonso Damico's class, "The Faces of Injustice: Thinking Politically About Cruelty." The second article, titled "A Credit to the University," was published in February 2005 and focused on Adjunct Assistant Professor John Byrne's "Advertising Theory" class. Published in October 2004, "Stars in Their Eyes" was about Professor Steve Spangler's class, "Stars, Galaxies, and the Universe." The final winning article, "Anatomically Correct," was published in August 2004 and described Professor Ken Mobily's "Human Anatomy" class.
This is the second consecutive year that the UI Alumni Association's flagship publication has been honored for the quality of its feature writing. Notre Dame's alumni magazine received a bronze award in the same category. Last year, CASE V judges awarded the magazine two bronze awards in the categories of Excellence in Feature Writing and Excellence in Feature Writing/Series.
The Iowa Alumni Magazine is published bimonthly for members of the UI Alumni Association, but selected stories from the magazine, including some of the gold medal-winning articles, are available online at www.iowalum.com/magazine.
